Measurement vs. Estimation: Why the Difference Matters in Blood Pressure

News

Blood pressure is one of the most important vital signs in medicine. As health technology moves beyond the clinic and into increasingly connected devices, the ability to understand blood pressure more conveniently has become a major focus of innovation.

Omer Inan speaks from a clear lectern on the purple Future Hub stage, beside a screen showing a Biozen technology slide, with audience members in the foreground.

But not all approaches to cuffless blood pressure work the same way.

Many emerging technologies seek to derive blood pressure insights from physiological signals and patterns. Biozen takes a fundamentally different approach: measuring pressure at arterial occlusion.

Biozen’s technology combines proprietary pressure sensing and optical photoplethysmography (PPG) with physiologically informed algorithms. As pressure is gradually applied at the fingertip, the system captures changes in the arterial pulse and the corresponding applied pressure to determine systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

Biozen measures systolic and diastolic blood pressure and delivers absolute values in mmHg, without requiring calibration to a traditional arm cuff.

The result is a clinical-grade absolute blood pressure measurement grounded in physiology.

Why the distinction matters

Connected health has made remarkable progress in measuring and interpreting signals ranging from heart rate and activity to sleep and temperature. Blood pressure presents a different challenge.

For technologies intended to expand access to meaningful cardiovascular information, the question isn’t simply whether blood pressure can become more convenient. It’s whether convenience can be achieved while maintaining clinically credible measurement.

Biozen’s approach was evaluated prospectively under the ISO 81060-2:2018 validation framework, the internationally recognized standard for noninvasive blood pressure devices.

That distinction, measurement rather than estimation, is central to how Biozen is redefining how the world measures blood pressure.

Built for what comes next

Biozen is developing more than a new way to measure blood pressure. Its hardware, software, sensing and algorithms form a scalable technology platform engineered for integration across the next generation of health technology.

As connected health continues to evolve, blood pressure has an opportunity to move beyond the traditional cuff and become part of our everyday lives.

Biozen has built the technology to make that possible.
