The Science Behind Measuring Blood Pressure From the Fingertip

News
A finger presses a small silver Biozen device, overlaid with line graphs of the pressure and PPG signals. Beside it, a phone shows the Biozen app's results screen: 132/85 mmHg, heart rate 82 bpm, Stage 1 Hypertension.

For decades, blood pressure measurement has been closely associated with one familiar tool: the arm cuff.

Biozen is taking the established physiological principles behind blood pressure measurement and applying them in a fundamentally different form, at the fingertip.

Pressure + optics + physiology

Biozen’s technology combines two key signals: optical photoplethysmography (PPG) and precisely measured contact pressure.

As a user gradually applies pressure to the Biozen sensor, the system measures both the externally applied pressure and changes in arterial pulsation at the fingertip. As the digital artery moves through varying levels of compression and ultimately occlusion, Biozen’s algorithms analyze the resulting physiological signals to determine systolic and diastolic blood pressure.

Unlike approaches that require an initial or recurring reference measurement from an external blood pressure cuff, Biozen’s technology is calibration-free.

That means Biozen can determine absolute systolic and diastolic blood pressure without first calibrating the technology to a traditional arm-cuff measurement.

The measurement is derived from the interaction between arterial pulsation and measured external pressure.

Putting the approach to the test

Biozen evaluated its BP1000 technology prospectively under the ISO 81060-2:2018 validation framework.

The study included 264 participants across three U.S. sites. Importantly, the device and algorithms were finalized before prospective testing began and remained unchanged throughout the study.

The study also intentionally included increased representation of participants with Fitzpatrick V and VI skin tones and Obesity Classes I and II, populations particularly important when evaluating emerging sensing technologies.

The results demonstrated accuracy according to both criteria of the recognized standard.

From fingertip measurement to a broader platform

The BP1000 demonstrates what Biozen’s sensing architecture can accomplish in an ultra-compact form factor. But the larger opportunity extends beyond a single device.

Biozen’s technology brings together proprietary sensors, hardware, software and AI algorithms in a platform engineered for integration and scale.

This combination of direct measurement, calibration-free operation and an ultra-compact sensing architecture creates endless possibilities.
